New paint gives the home a clean look and tells buyers that the house is in "move-in" condition. It could quickly pay off in the faster sale of your home— possibly at a higher price.
Before putting your house on the market, consider these tips for freshening up your abode with paint:
Select neutral colors
Neutral colors harmonize with almost any décor. For exteriors, keep it simple with white or another neutral color. Now is not the time to awe the neighborhood with your unique taste.

If you buy an expensive high-quality paint, you expect it to stick around for a while. However, high-quality paint is formulated to work with a primer. Primers allow the paint to grip better and stay around longer. Sure, they may cost a little more up front, but primers will save you money (and time) in the long run. When you purchase primer, make sure you purchase the right kind for the job.

Do I need a primer?
Primers seal porous surfaces like bare wallboard and sealing water borne stains and tannin stains. Some primers are specially designed to adhere to glossy surfaces like ceramic tile or high sheen cabinet surfaces, creating a stable bond for the base coat of paint. Primers work to reduce the amount of paint needed on porous surfaces which saves money.

Do I have to clean the walls?
The surface must be free from all dirt, grease, chalk, & mildew in order for the paint to bond securely.

Can wallpaper be painted over?
Wallpaper can be painted. Take the following precautions: apply a coat of a latex stain-killing primer and a coat of paint on a 12" square area making sure to cover a wallpaper seam. Allow to dry over night. If the pattern bleeds through or the wallpaper loosens from the wall, you will need to remove it before painting. If everything looks good, prime the entire area and paint.

I have peeling paint, what do I do before painting?
Peeling paint is usually due to moisture. The moisture problem will need to be corrected before removing the loose paint and re-painting. Caulking around edges will keep moisture out of the substrate. Also, make sure your home has ample ventilation because interior moisture can also cause exterior paint to peel.

How do I paint paneling?
Paneling requires special surface preparation to help the paint adhere. Sand the surface lightly or use a chemical deglosser to dull the sheen of the coating. Use a specially formulated primer for glossy surfaces as a first coat, which enables the base coat paint to adhere.

Do I need to de-gloss before painting?
All paints need to be able to adhere to the surface. Therefore, if you degloss or sand a gloss or semi-gloss painted surface, the new coat of paint will be able to stick to it and keep from streaking and possibly peeling.

Can I apply oil-based paints over latex paints or latex paints over oil-based paints?
The most important thing to know is the condition of the surface itself. Regardless of whether the base coat is oil or latex, you must dull glossy paint by sanding or deglossing with a chemical deglosser. If you don't dull glossy paint, the second coat will streak and not stick to the base coat when drying.

What type of brush do I need?
A top quality brush will apply more paint in less time, and provide a better looking, more durable finish. Latex paints should be applied with synthetic brushes (nylon/polyester). Oil-based paints can be applied with natural bristle brushes (China Bristle) or most nylon/polyester brushes.

What is enamel?
Enamel is only a descriptive term. When used in connection with a particular paint, enamel is used to indicate that the paint forms a tough hard finish, which is usually highly stain resistant and washable. An enamel can be manufactured in nearly any sheens and be either a latex or an oil-based paint.

Q. I'd like my kitchen to be vibrant but want calmer hues in the bedroom. What colors are best for the different areas of my home?
Brian Santos: When selecting color for a room, keep in mind that each color has a psychological value. Review the following emotional correspondences and strive to make your design feel right as well as look right.

Red
Red is warm, bold, stirring, and energetic. In its pure form it can increase heart rate and raise body temperature. Use red in rooms where activity occurs, like a family room, or where sleeping and resting is not a priority. For a deep, instense setting, use other colors sparingly in a red room. The eye is drawn to red, so it also makes an eye-catching accent color.

Yellow and Orange
Yellow and orange are just as exciting as red, but they are more cheerful than bold, more bright than stimulating. Yellow and orange warm and enliven any room where they are used, but work especially well to brighten dark rooms. On large surfaces they are best used in light values.

Blue
Blue, the color of sky and water, creates fresh, cool, and restful feelings. Blue walls can make a south- or west-facing room feel cooler. Because it "recedes," blue also creates the illustion of space and distance, conjuring up emotions of haughtiness, formality, reserve, and sadness.
In spite of evoking such contradictory reactions, blue is a favorite because it is easy on the eyes and the nerves, making it an excellent choice for rooms where you want to relax or sleep.

Green
Green is the dominant color in nature. It is a pleasing, organic, fresh, calming, and restful color. It is a great color for any room where you want a relaxed and fresh atmosphere.

Purple
Purple is lush, regal, and passionate. It is an intense and highly emotional color, partly because it straddles the line between the warm red and cool blue. This makes it a difficult color to use in interior design, and it is usually confined to the role of an accent.

Green Remodeling with Eco Friendly Paint

Looking for a way to make your house beautiful? There are many ways to update an old home, but whether you’re tearing down walls or just adding a little color, one thing you’ll definitely need is paint.

Virtually hundreds of paint choices fill the shelves of your local hardware store, so selecting a healthy, dependable, and eco friendly paint can take a bit of time, unless . . . you are equipped with the knowledge of a few key qualities that set eco paints apart from the rest. Before we dip our brushes into that bucket, let’s look at some reasons why run-of-the-mill paint can be hazardous to our health and to the environment.

Potential Hazards of Paint

According to the EPA, the concentration of pollutants inside your home is several times higher than what you’ll find outside, due to the lack of ventilation in rooms compared to the open spaciousness of the great outdoors. Without proper ventilation, airborne chemicals collect indoors and eventually cause damage to our bodies. Headaches, dizziness, fatigue, asthma, cancer, and heart disease are all potential side effects of indoor air pollution. Although the contamination cannot be attributed to any single source, paint and paint-related chemicals play a significant role inside a typical home.

The airborne chemicals released during painting, after the paint is dry, and as paint is removed, fall into a category of pollutants known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—potentially carcinogenic carbon-based chemicals that evaporate easily and contribute to indoor air pollution. Harmful compounds in the VOC category range from formaldehyde to pesticides to cleaning chemicals. They can be up to ten times more concentrated indoors than outdoors, in both rural and industrial locations. However, VOCs contribute significantly to air pollution out of doors as well. VOCs are released in the highest concentrations during paint application, but most paint will continue to emit harmful fumes for years afterwards.

The quality of many natural paints is commonly criticized because, in times past, colors tended to fade and you could not wash the walls without a touch-up following close behind. Newer eco paints, especially some newer lime washes, are more durable, washable, and longer lasting than those that came before them—some are even used for the restoration and preservation of national monuments!

Low-VOC Paints

Due to environmental regulations and increasing consumer demand, paint companies have developed new house paints that emit little or no VOCs. This is achieved by using water as a base instead of traditional, petroleum-based oil solvents. "Low-VOC" paints must meet the EPA standard of a maximum 200 grams volatile compound per liter of paint. Varnishes are awarded a limit of 300 grams. Although this is already less than half the VOC content of typical paints, Green Seal—a non-profit organization dedicated to improving environmental standards for paint and other products—has developed a certification process that limits low-VOC paints to 50 grams of VOC per liter. Look for the Green Seal on paint products to ensure only the lowest VOC paints are used in your home.

Ultra low-VOC paints are labeled "zero-VOC." These paints can sometimes cost a bit more than the regular cans, but the EPA restricts this label to paints with less than 5 grams of volatile compound per liter. Check to make sure that the products contain little or no formaldehyde, ammonia, or acetone—non-petroleum compounds that can adversely affect indoor air quality. Biocides and fungicides that prevent mildew growth and extend the shelf life of paint are also commonly added, despite their toxicity and their tendency to off gas for years after application.

Natural Interior Paints

A natural paint does not contain heavy metal or any VOCs. Natural paints and wood finishes are often composed of natural plant dyes, oils, and waxes. A number of environmentally conscious companies manufacture these products in all of the expected forms—paint, primer, finish, sealer, stain, wax, etc.—but many consumers find the costs overwhelming. Let's take a look at our natural options to see how they measure up.

Clay Paint
Clay paint is one of the most common natural paints—it is composed of earth-based minerals and uses mostly water as a solvent. If you enjoy an earthy, adobe look for your home, a coat of organic clay paint may be a good choice for your green home remodeling project. Colors range from natural earth tones to an assortment of blue, white, and orange tints. Clay paints adhere readily to most surfaces found inside a house, requires only two coats like most standard paints, and also function as an effective odor-absorber. The downside is that these paints are usually more expensive than petroleum-based paint and do not come in as wide a range of colors or textures.

If you wanted to paint your trim bright red or neon yellow, clay would not suit your needs. Also, clay paints can only be used indoors and clay-painted walls cannot be scrubbed, washed, or wiped down after they are stained or dirtied (without risking damage to the paint job), thus requiring touch-up painting to cover damaged spots. Although this problem can be remedied with a low-VOC sealer, you will have to commit a few extra dollars to purchase this premium product on top of your already costly clay paint.

Lime Wash
A reasonably inexpensive green alternative to traditional paint is lime wash. Limestone, a calcium-based mineral, is combined with water to form a simple, natural paint that is the basis of all whitewashes. Lime wash can be used indoors or outdoors and forms a unique, glowing finish that comes in a variety of colors. Surfaces that take well to lime washing differ from traditional paint surfaces because lime wash actually sinks into its subsurface, leaving a coat of calcium crystals that wears off the surface over time and creates a characteristic antique look. Because of this, lime wash can only be used with porous materials such as brick, wood, plaster, and concrete—drywall and painted surfaces do not take lime wash effectively. Lime wash is applied in thin coats, several of which may be needed for a thorough paint job. Although 100% natural, limestone is corrosive to both eyes and skin, so wear gloves and goggles during application.

Milk Paint
Another time-tested natural paint is milk-based paint. Casein, a protein found in milk products, is separated from the milk and mixed with water, clay, and earth pigments to form a thick, eco-friendly paint. Casein paint is a form of tempera paint, a fast-drying egg-based paint that has been in use since the days of ancient

Egypt

. Today, it is purchased in a dry, powdered form. The powder must be mixed with water and then used immediately (usually within hours to days) to prevent the paint from clumping before it reaches its destination. Milk, like clay, is intended as an interior paint and only comes in a matte finish.

Exterior Paints and Finishes

Unfriendly chemicals are often required to toughen paints slated for use in the great outdoors. Natural paints are rarely tough enough for outdoor use, so the variety of environmentally friendly outdoor paint is not nearly as extensive. Fortunately, the problem of VOCs is far less detrimental in outside painting projcts, as the air dilutes the effect of VOCs and awards outdoor paints and finishes a little leeway that is not given to indoor-use options. Outdoor coatings may call themselves eco-friendly as long as the product does not contain heavy metals or toxins.

Green remodelers concerned about outdoor air pollution do have options for low-VOC outdoor coverings. For those of us who are determined to find a completely natural exterior coating, the options are generally limited to stain, finish, or lime wash. For environmentally friendly low-VOC paints, browse these brands and others on the net or store shelves:

· St. Astier Lime Paints (especially their Natural Hydraulic Limes, which are non-toxic, recyclable, salt and bacteria resistant, and inhospitable to mildew)

Paint Removal

Some paint projects require removing a coat of paint before applying a new one. If you are trying to renew an old piece of furniture or get the paint of your beautiful wooden floor, you are going to need a paint stripper.

Before purchasing a remover, check the type of coat that you are trying to remove. A paint requires a different solvent than a wood finish, and different finishes necessitate separate strippers as well. Check that you are using the right product for the job—it will save you hours of elbow grease in the long run. To remove a coating from an upright surface (such as a wall), consider getting a remover that is a little pasty so that it stays in place after being applied to the surface.

Paint strippers are often petroleum based, which brings up the problem of VOCs, but they also contain a particularly harmful chemical called methylene chloride or, dichloromethane. If you can’t find a methylene-free remover at your local hardware store, look on the internet—there are a few eco friendly manufacturers available on the web. Be careful though, a methylene-free stripper still contains some pretty harsh chemicals. When performing your paint removal project, keep your workspace well ventilated and use gloves to keep unwanted compounds from absorbing through the skin.

A warning for readers who plan to remove paint: Before removing an old paint project from your walls, test for lead, especially if the surface was painted prior to 1980. Lead testing kits can be purchased at hardware stores nationwide. If your paint does contain lead, you may need a professional paint removal service to clear this toxin of your home without risk of contamination.

Painting Tips

If you are planning to try some of the environmental paint options presented in this article, here are a few tips you might find useful:

· Paints that do not contain VOCs are often water-based, which means they can be damaged by freezing temperatures. Store your paints indoors and time your order carefully—the paints can be damaged by cold weather during shipping.

· Store paint cans upside down. This will ensure that the lids are on tight, and will prevent air from flowing in and out of the can, which causes the paint to thicken and dry. A healthy can of paint saves the environment and your bank account.

· If you are using a combination of water and oil-based paints, be sure to use separate brushes for each one. As we all know, oil and water don’t mix, and trying to combine paints on a brush will result in a poor finished product.

Clean-up procedures depend largely on the paint you use. Here are guidelines for cleaning up. To maximize your investment on painting tools, make sure to clean them right after use.

Latex Paints
• Clean any spills before they dry with a paper towel dampened with water.
• Clean brushes, rollers and other tools with soap and water.
• After cleaning, flush spraying equipment with mineral spirits to prevent rusting. Follow manufacturer's safety recommendations when using mineral spirits.

Oil/Alkyd Paints
• Clean any spills before they dry with a paper towel dampened with mineral spirits or paint thinner.
• Oil-based (alkyd) paint must be removed from tools with mineral spirits or paint thinner.
• Pour the cleaning material into a clean bucket and rinse brushes and rollers well.
• When done, allow the solids to settle out of the cleaner, then strain the liquid back into the original container for reuse.
• Allow the settled solids to air-dry away from children, pets or open flames, then dispose of the container in the trash.

Brushes should be kept in their original wrapper or paper-wrapped in a manner that retains their original shape before storing.

Protect Your Paint Job

Wait at least two weeks before washing the newly painted surface. After that, clean with a mild household detergent and a soft cloth or sponge.

Tips To Protect The Environment

Try to buy only the amount of paint you need so there is little to dispose of when you complete your project. If you do have leftovers, follow these guidelines:
• Save small amounts of leftover paint for future touch-ups. To keep it fresh, place a layer of plastic wrap over the mouth of the can before replacing the lid. Pound down the lid securely.
• Check with your local waste collector to see if it accepts dried latex paint. If so, place the open can in an airy spot away from children and pets. When the paint is completely dry, put it in the trash.
• Or, seal oil/alkyd paints in the can and store them safely away from heat sources until you can take them to an appropriate waste-disposal site, such as community paint/stain collection events where you can safely dispose of leftover paints.
• Never pour stain down a drain, into a storm sewer or anywhere else that might contaminate the environment.

How to Paint Wood Paneling

Preparation Is Key

If you're tired of the wood paneling in your home, you might want to consider painting it. While painting paneling isn't hard to do, proper preparation is important to allow the paint to adhere well.

Clean Paneling

Start by wiping the paneling clean with a damp rag to remove any dust or dirt. If grease or other problem stains are present, remove them using an appropriate cleaner, then wipe with a clean, damp rag.

Fill Nail Holes

Putty any nail holes or other imperfections with spackling compound. Allow to dry, then sand the spackling flush with the surface.

Sand Paneling

Sand the paneling with 100 grit sandpaper using a pole sander, sanding block, or orbital sander. This will take the sheen off the finish, which will allow the paint to adhere to it better. Don't get carried away and sand the surface down to the bare wood -- just enough to rough up the existing finish.

Sand Trim

Lightly hand sand the wood trim, such as baseboards and door and window facings, to allow the paint to adhere to it. Once everything has been sanded, go over the walls and trim with a clean, damp cloth to remove any sanding dust.

Caulk Cracks

Apply caulk to any cracks and gaps where the paneling meets the baseboard or around doors and windows. Allow the caulking to dry thoroughly before painting.

Protect the Surrounding Areas

Cover the floor with drop cloths, and mask any areas you wish to protect with painter's tape.

Choose a Roller Cover

Use a roller with a medium nap to paint the paneling. It should have a long enough nap to fill the vertical grooves in the paneling, but short enough to leave a smooth surface.

Paint Paneling

Prime the paneling with a latex, stain-blocking primer. To improve the hiding ability over the dark wood, tint the primer with colorant so it is similar to the finished paint. Once the primer has dried, topcoat it with two coats of latex wall paint.

Paint Trim

Prime the trim with a primer. Topcoat the trim using either oil or latex enamel as desired.

A Modern Look

While painting over paneling takes a bit of extra preparation, the end result looks great. And it involves much less work than tearing it out and replacing the room with drywall.

Latex or Oil?Interior house paints are either latex- or oil/alkyd-based. Today, most oil-based paints are made with synthetic resins (alkyds), which perform better than paints based on natural oils. Matching Paint to Surfaces

Choosing the right paint for the surface will help ensure that you achieve a quality paint job that will last.
Ceilings - Use specially formulated flat ceiling paint (such as Classic 99® or StylePerfect®). The flat finish hides irregularities and lap marks. Ceiling paint rolls on with minimal spatter and won't yellow over time.
Woodwork - Use either latex or oil/alkyd paint. Always prime bare wood. Easy-to-clean semi-gloss finishes are first choice, but when wear-and-tear is modest, flat or satin finishes are fine selections.
Walls - Because it's easy to work with, latex paint is an excellent choice for do-it-yourself projects. Latex paints can be applied over properly primed drywall, wood or masonry.
Metal - Use either latex or oil/alkyd paint on properly primed iron or steel. You can apply latex directly on aluminum and galvanized metal. However, these metals need to be properly primed if you're using oil/alkyd-based paint.
Masonry - For cement, concrete block and brick surfaces, acrylic latex wall paint designed for masonry surfaces is an excellent choice.
Floors - Use high-gloss acrylic floor enamels to stand up to abrasion, traffic and heavy scrubbing.

Turn off the circuit breaker that powers the switches or outlets on the wall, and remove any electrical covers.

Apply Wallpaper Remover
Spray or roll the wallpaper remover on the wall, then wait 15 minutes or so for it to soak through and loosen the paper. Be sure to wear protective eyewear when spraying wallpaper remover.

Peel Wallpaper
Apply a second coat of wallpaper remover to keep the paper moist. Use a putty or drywall knife to loosen the paper, then begin peeling it off. Be careful not to gouge the wall.

Remove Backing Layer
Often the top layer of wallpaper will separate from the backing. If this happens, apply the wallpaper remover again and repeat the process.

Patch Walls
Continue working until all the wallpaper has been removed. Patch any bad spots on the wall with spackling compound. Allow the spackling to dry and sand it smooth before painting.

Don't like the idea of your neighbors rudely snooping on the wireless signal you slaved to pay for from the lazy comfort of their living room? It's not just about slowing down your connection; while they're downloading Mad Men via bittorrent, you could be on the hook for their actions.
Wireless security and encryption systems are fraught with problems and insecurity, and other methods to restrict your signal to a small area are cumbersome at best.
Enter a new solution: Anti-Wi-Fi paint.
The idea is simple: Use a special paint on walls where you don't want wireless to pass through (say the exterior of your house). The secret is mixing aluminum-iron oxide particles in with the paint. The metal particles resonate at the same frequency as Wi-Fi and other radio waves, so signals can't pass through the thin layer of pigment. Outsiders would simply be unable to access your wireless network, just as you, inside the house, won't be able to interlope on anything beamed on the outside.
Developed by the University of Tokyo, the paint is said to be the first that can block radio frequency in higher spectra where Wi-Fi and other higher-bandwidth communications occur rather than just low-frequency wireless like FM radio. Most Wi-Fi technologies operate at 2.4GHz; the Tokyo paint can reportedly block frequencies all the way up to 100GHz, with a 200GHz-blocking paint now in the works.
The paint isn't just of interest to those concerned about wireless leaking out of the building. Movie theaters have long been interested in finding a legal way to keep cell phones silent during screenings. Electronic jammers that actively block wireless signals are illegal, but passive materials that prevent wireless signals from getting through are not. Since the wireless-blocking paint can also block the lower-frequency signals that cell phones use, addled mobile junkies would have no outlet for reaching the outside world.
Some aren't convinced that anti-Wi-Fi paint makes a lot of sense for a secure situation, though. Wallpaper Nightmares
Beauty is often said to be in the eye of the beholder, and that is especially true when it comes to wallpaper. So if the floral pattern the previous owners loved is giving you nightmares, it might be time to make a change.

Paint Over Wallpaper
If the wallpaper is in good condition and not made of vinyl, it may be possible to paint over it rather than remove it. When painting over wallpaper, prime it first with a shellac-based stain blocking primer or one made for painting over wallpaper. Test the primer on a small area first and allow it to dry to be sure it doesn't cause the glue in the paper to pull loose.

Score Wallpaper
When removing wallpaper, it's necessary to score the paper first to allow the wallpaper remover to penetrate. This can be done with a special wallpaper scoring tool or a standard utility knife. When using a utility knife to score the paper, apply only enough pressure to cut through the wallpaper to keep from damaging the wall. Score horizontal lines in the wallpaper every foot or so.

Mix Wallpaper Remover
To remove the wallpaper, fill a pump-up sprayer with a mixture of warm water and wallpaper remover, following the directions on the wallpaper remover container.

Pump Sprayer
Secure the lid on the sprayer and pump it up. Wallpaper remover can also be applied using a paint roller.

Use a brush to finish the surface with smooth strokes.

Painted Rugs
Base-coat your rug material if desired. After the base coat dries, use a straightedge to guide your stencil placement. So I thought, "Hmmm...that's interesting." But then I saw it again on Design*Sponge's sneak peek of Gemma Ahern's London-area apartment. Except Gemma's entire apartment was gray. It seems there happens to be a mini-trend in paint: floor to ceiling dark gray walls. And I'm talking the moldings, too. And not just gray, deep dark charcoal gray. I would think that this is probably a risky decision, so I decided to ask an interior designer about this phenomenon to find out if gray is really go.I spoke with Mollie Chalk of Pineapple House and asked her a few questions about these smoky interiors. When should you consider painting a room in a dark shade of gray or any dark color? Although painting a room a dark color is not typical, there are many reasons why you might consider it. It can add drama and visual interest to any space. Before you paint your walls a dark color, make sure that you have other elements of your design that help support and balance the impact. I prefer using a dark color in a room that can handle the drama. There is no real reason why you would have to be restrictive of dark colors if you like them. The most important thing when planning a room with dark colored walls is to make sure you have plenty of natural light and a variety of textures to make it cohesive and inviting. The simplest way to get texture in a room is by utilizing fabric. Because of the diversity of textile fibers, as well as the advancement in weaving technology, fabrics can offer an endless variety of textural surfaces that absorb and reflect light in different ways. When should you perhaps consider not going dark? If the space is relatively small with low ceilings you should consider going in another direction. Often times, small dark rooms feel claustrophobic. No amount of artificial light and texture can help a dark room if it's too small. I would avoid common everyday areas. Lighting would be a big reason why. Most commonly used spaces need not only natural light, but also a lot of task and ambient lighting. Lighter colored walls work best when you need a lot of light.

When painting a room a very dark color, how do you suggest keeping it feeling light and open?Having natural sunlight is ideal when painting with dark colors. Use different types of task lighting. Don't limit yourself to table lamps. Consider floor lamps, pendant lights, and/or sconces. When picking shades, go with something more translucent so that more light can be distributed. If you have recessed or track lighting, try to aim the light at a specific area or focal point. To keep the walls from drowning the space, add texture wherever possible. The more interesting surfaces you have in a dark room the better. Another tip: Use mirrors. Mirrors are a great way to help open up a dark space by creating more refractory light and visual interest. Consider mirrored surfaces on furniture and of course wall mounted mirrors. For the real drama seekers, an accent-mirrored wall would be a wise choice not only for the appeal, but the amount of light it helps create in a dark space. Mollie also offered two distinct design options when decorating around dark painted walls: 1) Work with that color and create a monochromatic palette - make sure to incorporate texture! You could even paint the ceiling the same color so that the room disappears. This creates an infinite backdrop for the wonderful things you use to personalize your space. 2) Use contrasting colors to make it stand out or "pop" against that dark wall. It's important when picking a contrasting color to a dark color that they have a similar hue and saturation. One last tip: Make sure you plan the entire room before you get started. The most successful design occurs when all of the components were thought out as a whole

How to Choose Colors
Begin at the Beginning
Determine what features or existing finishes in the room you would consider permanent. Consider the cabinets, tile or a brick fireplace. For example, if the wood of your kitchen cabinets has a red undertone, make sure the paint color you choose works well with that hue.
Create a Focal Point
Emphasize your home's attractive architectural features, such as crown molding or arched window treatments, with contrasting paint — lighter or darker than the wall — or by painting them with a glossy finish. You can also make one wall an accent wall by painting it a different color, giving it a faux finish, adding wallpaper or a border.
Unify the Color Flow
You can unify rooms by using a common color palette. Create distinct spaces by altering the shade and hue within the common palette.
Emphasize or Minimize
Color can emphasize certain features - and minimize others. A long narrow room will look wider if you use a slightly darker color on the shorter walls and a lighter color on the longer walls. You can make a ceiling appear higher by applying a lighter color, or lower with a darker color. To give a big room a more intimate feel, paint the walls in colors that advance toward you, such as red, gold, orange and brown. To help a small room seem larger, paint the walls in colors that make them appear to recede, such as blue, green or violet.
Reflect on Light Sources
Remember that the color you choose may look different at various times of the day and night. The warm tones of incandescent lights will have a different influence on the color than the natural light of day. Once you're aware of how different light sources can affect your color choices, you can change your room's "mood" to match the pace of your day.

Understanding color concepts and painting techniques will help you pick the right hues the first time -- and apply paint in a way that will last. Here are some tips to get you started.
From Simply Perfect Color Schemes

Surface Prep
Painting a wall is an easy way to add color to your rooms.
Here are some hints designed to help you achieve painting perfection.
Before you apply the first coat of paint, be sure the surface is clean, smooth, and dry.

· Sanding: Use 80-grit sandpaper to smooth out blemishes and surfacing compound to repair dings. Always sand the surfacing compound once it's dry and remove any dust.
· Washing: It's a good idea to wash wall surfaces before you begin, especially if you have sanded and need to remove the dust.
· Paint only dry surfaces. In damp weather, run an air-conditioner or dehumidifier or wait for more favorable conditions.
· Use a 2-1/2 or 3-inch flat brush to outline walls and ceilings and an extension roller to fill in the rest of the space.
· Paint ceilings before walls. Textured ceilings might require a sprayer.
· Load a brush by dipping the bristles one-third of the way into the paint. Lift the bristles out of the paint, then gently tap (don't wipe) them against the can's rim. The point is to load the brush just short of dripping on the way to the wall.
· Load a roller by dipping it into a tray full of paint and rolling it up the tray's ramp until the cover is saturated. Work in small sections (4-foot areas), rolling paint onto the wall in an overlapping W motion to prevent roller marks.
Brushstrokes
The key to applying a good coat of paint is choosing the correct brush.
As a basic rule, natural bristle brushes are best for oil-base paint, including stain, varnish, shellac, lacquer, and polyurethane; manufactured bristles are best for water-base (latex) paints.
If you prefer a very smooth surface, paint pads and foam rollers are excellent tools.
Cut down on some of the drips of paint by using a nail to punch several holes around the bottom of the paint can's rim. The holes will let paint drain back down into the can and keep it from pooling around the rim when you pour into a roller tray or smaller container.

· Determine the purpose of the room, then browse these guidelines to help you decide what type of finish to choose.
· Flat paints offer ideal, nonreflective surface quality. These paints are better suited for lower-use areas in the home or in new construction, as flat paints help mask surfaces to make them appear smooth and uniform.
· Eggshell and satin finish paints have a bit more sheen than flat paints and are ideal for places that need a cleanable but not shiny finish.
· Semi-gloss and high-gloss paints are ideal in spaces where wall surfaces need to be wiped frequently, such as the kitchen. High-gloss paints also produce the toughest and most stain-resistant finishes, so they also are ideal in children's bedrooms and bath spaces. TIP: surface preprartion is key to a successful high-gloss finish, since every imperfection will be highlighted with glossy paint.
· Oil-base paints have resins and thinners in them and are best used on chalky surfaces and over areas already painted with oil-base paints

· Many paint companies now offer small containers of paint to take home and try before committing to a gallon or even a quart. Always paint a few color samples on your walls (or on a sample board). View them in daylight and artificial light so you can see which color will work best in your room.
· The larger the room, the stronger the color appears. In big rooms, consider buying a lighter value of the hue.
· Apply two thin coats instead of one thick coat, which could dry unevenly and leave lap marks.
· In calculating the amount of paint needed, measure the perimeter of the room and multiply the result by the ceiling height to get square footage. (Don't deduct for windows or other openings unless they add up to more than 100 square feet.) Divide the square footage by the number of square feet the gallon of paint promises to cover. This will give you the number of gallons you will need.
Brush Lingo
ROLLER: A 1-1/2-inch foam paint roller allows you to load three or four times as much paint as other materials and will roll over any surface. Rollers won't splatter paint or leave residue behind.
MINI ROLLERS: Typically 4 inches wide, these rollers make it easy to paint small areas, and they apply paint as evenly as the larger versions. The smaller rollers are ideal for getting into tight corners.
PADS: These tools are good for decreasing splatters when applying paint to a surface. They work fast and are good for painting edges. The pad's handle can be attached to an extension pole for painting ceilings or high walls.
BRUSHES: Use a 2-1/2- or 3-inch flat brush to outline walls and ceilings (a technique known as "cutting in"). Use angled brushes for tricky areas that require more brush control.

Sand smooth when dry. Prime the trim. Paint vertical pieces with vertical strokes and horizontal pieces with horizontal strokes. Work on each piece from the bottom up.

How to Paint Ceramic

Sand the surface lightly to ensure paint adhesion. Clean the surface with trisodium phosphate (TSP) cleaner to remove grease and dirt. When dry, apply a bonding or ceramic primer. Let the primer dry. Brush on latex paint in a gloss or semigloss finish. You also can use a paint formulated for ceramic or porcelain surfaces. Allow the paint to dry for several days and take care not to scratch the paint while it’s curing.
